Meet Hassan, our latest commercial kitchen equipment technician

Any efficient and profitable commercial kitchen environment is underpinned by meticulously maintained equipment and appliances, allowing staff to work at peak performance across high demand periods.

To achieve that, catering managers need to be working with a service provider that can repair, service and maintain equipment to the highest standard by staff that know what they are doing.

BBCS, serving the Midlands region, knows all too well that employing the right staff and giving them adequate training, is pivotal to them continuing to provide excellent support to their commercial kitchen clients.

Latest to join the BBCS team is Hassan Javed, Commercial Catering Equipment Technician Apprentice.

What course are you doing?

I’m doing a Level 3 (Advanced) Commercial Catering Equipment Technician Apprenticeship. It runs for 26-months and is held in Stockport.

What is your end goal?

While it’s early on in my career, I want to become an engineer that’s capable of working at the highest standard.

To work at that level, I need to be able to identify faults, overcome challenges and, as I progress, learn to work on a broad range of equipment, including refrigeration.

Having an oversight of a wide range of commercial kitchen appliances and environments will mean I can confidently tackle all appliance and equipment types.

Do you enjoy working for BBCS?

Absolutely! At the moment my role is diverse, and I love that.

As soon as I arrive on site, I start to liaise with customers. Whoever I’m with supervises me as I attempt to fault-find. If I’m unsure, my supervisor will help me identify the fault by guiding me in the right direction, rather than taking over the process. I appreciate that approach as it helps me to learn.

Other days, I might be servicing equipment and using the knowledge I already have to repair equipment and/or make sure it’s working at the correct level. Sometimes, following a service, I source product codes for replacement parts and fill out the necessary paperwork. I have also helped with new equipment installations.

Aside from this ‘on the job’ work, I attend college once every 5 weeks to meet my tutor and am in the office every 2 weeks. This gives me the time to write up evidence for my portfolio.

The BBCS team are amazing – they are like a second family! I hope I’ve fitted in from the outset and that’s down to their friendliness, training approach and professionalism.

Is it hard work?

Being an engineer is both hard work and hands-on - and no 2 days are the same.

I enjoy problem-solving and seeing the relief and delight from customers when issues are resolved for them. In that sense, it’s very rewarding.

When I was searching for an apprenticeship opportunity, I came across BBCS and was invited in for an interview. They were exceptionally welcoming and knowledgeable from the get-go. As soon as they offered me the role, I knew it was right for me.

Since joining, I’ve been sent on a series of manufacturer/appliance courses to learn about Maidaid, ClasseQ and Retigo brands, a WOW training (electrical component fault finding and testing course), and an Electrical Safe Isolation Course, equivalent to a City and Guilds Award.

What’s the most challenging aspect of your role?

Trying to stick to the allocated labour time for quoted works.

As a trainee, I’m nearly up to speed, but have a way to go if I am to keep up with the fully trained engineers.

Your proudest achievement?

Probably passing the Electrical Safe Isolation Course. Also, I’ve had a couple of clients that have written positive testimonials saying how well I handled their job.

What about the future?

I would love to swap jobs with John Blount, Director of BBCS and a very skilled and experienced engineer. We’ll see!
